Mayfly
They live as Larvae for almost a full year under water. They then rise to the surface as a dun or a sub-adult and fly into the trees and molt and turn into a full adult called a spinner. Then they return to the water and lay their eggs.
Stone
The stone fly also has a Larvae state, but they crawl to the bank and hatch into a full adult out of the water.
Midges
Midges start life as a worm like Larvae, like cadis flies they have a pupae stage that is easily spotted near the surface by fish. midges also return to the water and mate and hatch.
Cadis
They live on the bottom as Larvae and construct a case out of stones and sticks, some are free living and don't build cases. Just before they hatch into winged adults they go into a pupa stage which is a life stage that rises to the surface once it reaches the surface it struggles to turn into a winge adult. Cadis can live for up to a month before they return to the water. After they return to the water and mate and lay eggs. the carcas will be on the water and is called spent.
